Rebels of Mindanao

A Novel by Tom Anthony

Al Qaeda terrorists are spreading silently throughout the globe wreaking violence on all who oppose them. Their newest target: the small Philippine island of Mindanao.

On the brink of civil war, success in Mindanao would trigger a chain reaction across the pacific threatening democracy and peace around the globe.Haunted by the failure of his last mission and the lost lives of his team, Thomas Thornton had hoped to escape his former life as a military operative, seeking the calm beauty of tropical Mindanao.

Hi there, my name is Tom Anthony, author of Rebels of Mindanao, a novel I wrote in 2008 after returning from my home at the time on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. I have lived and worked in Austria, Italy, Spain, England, Iraq, Israel, and throughout Asia, Latin America, and Africa, and for three years on the island of Mindanao in the southern Philippines. The novel is set there, and follows the main character Thomas Thornton in a fast-paced military thriller. The character has only a loose similarity to myself, however my hope is that this site and the blog will provide a resource not only about the book and myself, but also as an informative source of information from my musings about beautiful Mindanao and Philippine culture from my “expat” cultural perspective.

Feel free to comment and contact me; let’s engage in meaningful dialogue and I am eager to hear what you think about the book, Philippines culture, Mindanao or the topic of terror in the world today.

Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood opposition group called for mass protests against the government’s response to Israeli airstrikes in Gaza but police moved to quell street protests over the issue. Fights between police officers and protesters broke out in Cairo, Friday, and dozens of arrests were reported. In Egypt, about 400 people gathered near the Al Fatah Mosque in Cairo to protest the ongoing Israeli attacks in Gaza and to get the Egyptian government to open the border between Gaza and Egypt. With tears in his eyes, one demonstrator says Egypt should open its border to help its Palestinian brothers, the injured, the sick. He says he cannot watching television reports of the violence and remain calm. He asks to remain anonymous to protect himself from possible Egyptian government reprisal. Security officials say Egyptian police arrested at least 40 members of the opposition Muslim Brotherhood as they prepared for the demonstrations Friday against Israel’s actions in Gaza. So far more, than 800 Palestinians have been killed in the assault, which Israel launched in response to a series of rocket attacks by Hamas militants in Gaza. The demonstrations in Cairo were just one of the many protests in the Muslim world from the Philippines to Jordan. But in Cairo, the government moved in quickly to restrict the demonstrations. Fights erupted between police and protesters, but the security forces quickly prevailed. Officers in civilian clothing loaded protesters on to large police

Great flood in Rio Grande de Mindanao – Clearing operation at Delta Bridge,Cotabato City

Delta Bridge in Cotabato City needs urgent declogging operation before the entire city will submerge in water that spilled from the Rio Grande de Mindanao due to gigantic accumulation of drifted aquatic plants and soil at the foot of the bridge. Dredging machines are no match with the huge dirt and trash. They progressed slowly and even got stalled. I wonder what those military hovercrafts are doing. It looks like they are just toying around these big toys. What will happen to the aquatic plants that drifted into the sea? Will they just disappear or create another big problem? Noted typos: at the end of the video I misspelled “dredge” with “dridge” and “rainy” with “rainny.” My oversight. Copyright by Edgie Polistico – ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. The second-largest archipelago in the world, with over 7000 tropical islands, the Philippines is one of the great treasures of Southeast Asia. Often overlooked by travellers because of its location on the wrong side of the South China Sea, the Philippines rewards those who go the extra distance to reach it. And because its off the beaten path, the Philippines is a great place to escape the hordes who descend on other parts of Southeast Asia. First and foremost, the Philippines is a place of natural wonders a string of coral-fringed islands strewn across a vast expanse of the western Pacific. Below sea level, the Philippines boasts some of the worlds best diving and snorkelling, including wreck diving around Coron and swimming with the whale sharks off Donsol. Above sea level, it has a fantastic landscape with wonders enough to stagger even the most jaded traveller: the Chocolate Hills of Bohol, Banaue & the Rice Terraces and fascinating reminders of the islands history in places such as Samar & Leyte and Vigan. And if youre after palm-fringed, white-sand beaches, try laidback Sipalay or flat-out party town Boracay.
